A number of factors impact on the quantity of asphalt needed to surface an area.  This includes the material's inherent density, the variability of the installed thickness and the level of compaction achieved.

The following calculator is provided only as a guidance tool.  Further guidance on asphalt 'superage' is given in BS 594987 Annex B Approximate rates of spread for asphalt although this is provided in another format (m2 that 1 tonne of asphalt will cover) and includes a range which reflects the factors mentioned above.
